‘MERRIE BLERRIE X – MAS’
Jack Parow is done and dusted with the shooting of the video for his end of year single, aptly named – Merry Xmas.
The video was shot in Durban and produced by long – time friend Warren Haviside. Warren’s ad agency and production house, SUGAR, ensured the video hit the spot.
According to Warren, the video came out quite different to the way in which they initially planned for. Their vision was to capture Durban at its best – showcasing amazing summer locations with load of sunshine.
Mother Nature had a different concept in mind. Warren says, “The weather had other plans for us and it ended up raining non – stop for a like 5 weeks. We had to think quick and box clever and shoe – horn a few things, but in the end it all turned out well.”
For Warren and his team the main thing they focussed on, was pinning down the persona and demeanour which made Jack Parrow…Jack Parrow.
“We didn’t try to make as if it was some huge production with endless budget – although the video did cost a bit! We rather focussed on making it look quite low – brow, keeping it slightly Zef and steamy,” says Warren.
The first day was shot in studio. Warren laughing states the level of crazy to the situation, “We had about 30 extras – zulu dancers, snakes, kids, girls, fat people, skinny people, gear, crew – it was just mal!”
The second day was shot on location – on the Durban beach front, on the hotel strip and in uShaka Marine World. Warren commends the amazing team they worked with on the video. “The team were all so selfless and threw themselves into the video. Although SUGAR produced the video – we have to thank people like Sean Laurenz & Harold Holscher (Directors) for the time they put into it. Drury who did the styling – she was amazing. Jimmy Reynolds & Lee Jackson (DOP’s) and David Gouldie who did choreography and Lindsay Nixon (make up) who was responsible for all the extras that were so forthcoming. Kraft Post & Mushroom Media should be commended for cutting the video and doing all the grading and treatments.”
Another powerful driving force that carried them through the video was the tight relationship between Warren and Parow.
“I’ve known him for years and it allowed us to always ensure that the essence of Jack Parow was never lost in this video, but rather captured”, says Warren.
