22 Mar

On the 26th of March, Lucy Kruger will be sharing the Carnival Court stage in Long Street with Dutch Reality stars, Nick and Simon.

The Dutch duo is in South – Africa to shoot a reality series in which they explore the country and its vibrant music scene. The series will also see the duo meet up and – collaborate with, some of the country’s hottest emerging talents.

One of their first creative collaborations will be with velvet voiced Lucy Kruger. They approached Lucy after hearing her music; complimenting her sultry voice, exceptional song-writing ability and inimitable on stage persona.

The collaboration will take the form of an impromptu jam session, during one of Lucy’s shows at Carnival Court.

Lucy will open her set as usual, at some point throughout her set, invite the duo to play one or two of their own songs, and eventually end the show with a collaborative effort.

Make sure you make a break for Carnival Court this coming Tuesday from 8pm onwards.

REBURN returns with ‘Won’t Let Go’

19 Mar

REBURN are ready to let RIP another single off their forthcoming album – rumored to drop end of August this year.

Won’t Let go, the second single off their forthcoming album, is considered a labor of love from the side of front man Scottie Moore. According to Moore, the song came together organically – revolving around the mindset of individuals who can’t let go of past relationships, failing to see promise in the future. Says Moore about the new track: “It’s so different from our other tracks, but really gives you the feeling of where we are heading as a band. We are very proud of how this song turned out!”

Won’t Let Go is the final single to be released off the forthcoming album, before it drops end August.

Some Taxi Violence for you?

6 Mar

The Cape Town based rockers are busy recording their brand new album.

After keeping things stripped down and mellow with their 2011 release, the Taxi men are eager to get back to their rock and roll roots.

Half of the upcoming album was recorded in 2012 and given to fans for free download as an early Christmas present. The first single off the upcoming album, Paint the Streets, was released in November 2011. The smash reached number 1 on Tuks FM’s SA Top 10 and Puk FM’s Top 40. The recording of the remainder of the tracks will be finished by the 15th of March 2013. The album is set for release later this year – but the Taxi ranks are tight-lipped with regards to a precise date.

The album is being produced at Heritage Sound Studio by Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw. Rossouw was part of the winning team that helped record the SAMA nominated release, UNPLUGGED: Long Way From Home. The great Theo Crous from Bellville Studios has been approached to mix and co-produce the album.

Taxi Violence are giving fans an inside peek in their recording process, by keeping an online studio diary. You can follow their diary here;

Gerald Clark on the move!

4 Mar

Hot on the heels of Gerald Clark’s Black Water release, is a headlining act at one of the country’s most respected Blues festivals, a tour to the Czech Republic and a soon to be released new full length album!

Local and international audiences can rejoice – some Gerald Clark live is heading your way.

On the 2nd of March, Clark will be occupying a headlining spot at the BIG Blues Music Festival in Kleinmond. After the BIG Blues Music Festival, Clark will pack up his guitar to set sail – or rather take flight – to the Czech Republic for a few live performances .

Some of Clark’s Czech Republic shows  include:

 12 March 2013 –  Jazz Dock, Prague

 15 March 2013 – Club Andaluzja, Poland

22 March 2013 – Echo of Blues Alive Festival (17th anniversary)

23 March 2013 – Jazzinec Jazz Festival (15th anniversary), playing alongside such greats as Erik Truffaz and Anna Aaron (F/CZ), the Paul Lieberman Quartet (USA/CZ), Frank Gambale Natural High Trio (USA) and the Benson McGlashan Jazz Trio (USA, CAN, CZ)

 27 March 2013 –  Piestany, West Slovakia

Clark is obviously extremely excited about the shows in the Czech Republic.

He still remembers the day he read BB King’s autobiography. King was standing in front of 100 000 people on a stage in Moscow. They didn’t understand his language, but they did not have to. His guitar and his voice were the true communicators. Clark says: “I feel honored to go to a foreign country to speak the only language I know well…and that’s the blues.”

After his Czeching adventures, Clark will return to South – Africa to release his brand new album. The album is currently in its polishing phase and promises to introduce a wider audience to his exceptional voice.

According to Clark, the new album is coming along great. The songs have been accumulated over a long period, with a few new songs composed after his vocal setback last year. The music falls outside of a specific genre box. Schalk van der Merwe helped Clark to produce an album that promises to depict a new level in musical maturity to Clark’s work.

Some of the phenomenal artists featured on the new album include; Adriaan Brand (from Springbok Nude Girls) on trumpet and accordion,  Ronan Skillen on percussion, Guy Collins (from Mean Black Mamba and Hot Water) on slide guitar and banjo and Simon Orange on piano and Hammond. The album is being recorded at T-Time studio’s, with Tim Rankin as musical dictator, mixer, engineer and drummer. Luna Paige and Karlien van der Walt feature on backing vocals. Clark proudly states: “ It’s going to sound awesome!”

Goud + Goud + Goud = Die Heuwels Fantasties.

19 Feb

Pierre Greeff:  “Dat ons derde album so vinnig kon goud gaan is wonderlik! Dankie aan ieder en elke een wat ons ondersteun en ons musiek koop julle maak dit moontlik vir ons om te doen wat ons doen. Baie dankie!”

Hunter Kennedy:  “Ek is so dankbaar dat mense so gretig is om ons te ondersteun. Dis ‘n seën dat so baie aanhangers aanklank vind by ons musiek. Hierdie tipe erkenning spoor ons net aan!”

Fred den Hartog: “Super stoked!”

Philip Erasmus: “Wat ‘n eer!”

Grant Nash is on a mission save the Dolphins.

14 Feb

Media personality, former 5FM and Highveld DJ, Grant Nash, is on a mission to save the world’s dolphin community.5372_115723216959_4494485_SMALL1[1]

Grant is currently in Taiji Japan, as part of an awareness campaign against the vile slaughter of tens of thousands of dolphins, porpoises and small whales. He was approached by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit marine conservation organization, to help shed light and awareness on this grotesque annual occurrence. With the backing of PURE IMAGINATION MEDIA and CANON South Africa, Grant will be documenting every aspect of his trip.

Dragging Aboard Dolphin- Blood
Every year more than 20 000 dolphins, porpoises, and small whales are slaughtered in Japan. From the beginning of September to March the following year, fisherman herd whole families of small cetaceans into shallow bays to slaughter them. This annual occurrence was brought to light in 2003 when Sea Shepherd globally released covertly-obtained footage and photographs of the now infamous bloody “Cove” in the village Taiji.

Herded in to the cove for slaughter.

Herded in to the cove for slaughter.

The widespread controversial release of the documentary, The Cove, got people talking on all social platforms. More and more people are now aware of what happens in the cove in Taiji. Continual pleas to the Japanese government to put an end to this annual slaughter have fallen upon death ears. The blind eye Japanese officials are turning to the situation, has not dampened the spirits and efforts of the hundreds of Cove Guardians.

Through the continual documentation of the Taiji slaughter, Grant and the rest of the Cove Guardians are hoping to bring about international pressure for change. On the ground, they try to force economic pressure on the local government of Taiji, as well as the Japanese Government. Policeman and the National Guard are deployed in Taiji to keep an eye on the fisherman. They say: “If we can continue to stream in- and continue to apply this economic pressure on the killers and the captive trade, we hope to create an environment where they feel the pressure to stop the killing and captures.”

Members part of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Grant explains his drive to help raise awareness on the Taiji cove and its killings by saying:
“The Ocean, which covers two thirds of our planet, is an extremely volatile and complicated eco-system. This eco-system thrives and functions on diversity. Once you eliminate an entire species you cause havoc on the biodiversity of the seas. Dolphins are highly intelligent, social animals who communicate and live in complex family units like we do. They play a very important role in this biodiversity. Seeing that the oceans give our planet two thirds of its oxygen supply, most scientists and biologists agree that messing with this ecology is going to have devastating effects.
In short, the issue of dolphin slaughter or the decimation of any natural resource is a global dilemma that has far reaching and devastating implications for us all, and as custodians of this planet we have the most important role to play in its conservation.”

Grant also has a message for every dolphin lover out there. He says: “Don’t support the captive trade anywhere in the world, especially here at home. I am a scuba diver who has had many direct encounters with wild dolphins; trust me when I say it’s far, far more rewarding than watching them jump through stupid hoops and smacking a ball with their tail. If you love dolphins like I do, become a SCUBA diver and see them in the wild and stop contributing to the death of thousands of these incredible creatures yearly by the direct support of marine parks and aquariums. Become a Cove Guardian!”

One night in Cape Town was all it took for Red Huxley to potentially change their lives. Backstage at this particular concert the men approached theRtR_4 legendary Dave Catching from Eagles of Death Metal. They gave him a sample of their music and asked whether he would be interested in producing their debut album. Dave replied with a simplistic, “Sweet, so when are we gonna do this record?”

Dave invited the Huxleys to record at his studio, Rancho de le Luna, in Joshua Tree, California. This iconic studio has been the recording home of many of the voices behind Red Huxley’s musical inspiration. A few of names dropped  are Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Arctic Monkeys and Dave Grohl.

This once in a lifetime opportunity – helping Red Huxley bridge the music gap between the local and the international market – does not come cheap. In a relative small industry, with a currency that makes international travel a tall order – getting the funding to back this venture is a heap of hard work. With this in mind, the Huxleys are calling on family, friends and fans to aid them in their journey. They have set up a Kickstarter project to raise money to get them to Rancho.

Do your good deed for the year – a small contribution from your side will help aid Red Huxley in their music journey.
